[MAGIC BOOK].
[Magic book in French, engraved and watercolored].
S.l., ca. 1780-1790. - In-12, 185 x 140 : (12 ff.). In leaves.
Attractive illusionist's "magic book", composed of 22 figures engraved and colored at the time, including 11 printed upside down.
This type of work, usually heavily handled, is very difficult to find from this period. Increasingly in vogue in the 19th century, they prefigured flip books, animated books that can be brought to life by rapidly flipping through them with the thumb.
Copy with the holes in the inner margin, which held the string used to hold the notebook. It was undoubtedly easier to handle the book without this string. The outer edge of the leaves is cut into interleaves, in the style of a textbook.
Tears on the edges of the leaves, especially affecting the dividers. A corner of the second leaf is missing, with no damage to the engravings, and the seventh leaf has a repaired tear with no damage to the engravings.
