PICASSO (Pablo). Carnet de la Californie. Introduction by Georges Boudaille. Paris : Cercle d'Art, 1959. - Carnet in-4, 421 x 270 and brochure in-8 oblong, 210 x 249: (25 ff.), printed cover (carnet) and 13 pp. (1 f.), for the brochure. Spiral-bound notebook and stapled brochure, in publisher's illustrated cloth folder. First edition of this album, "an exact facsimile of the sketchbook on which Picasso worked from November 1, 1955 to January 14, 1956. Under the same cardboard cover as the notebook he bought, twenty-five sheets of the same thickness are joined together by a similar spiral binding. On each sheet, everything drawn by Picasso's hand has been reproduced with the extreme fidelity permitted by the most modern reproduction processes and the zeal of the best lithographers" (Introduction). The work was published simultaneously in France, Germany, Italy and the United States. This one (no. 1167) is one of 1,400 copies reserved for France, numbered from 101 to 1,500. A very well preserved copy, complete with Georges Boudaille's introduction, which is sometimes missing. Spine of slipcase slightly browned, wear to covers, one corner damaged.
