SAUVAGE (Sylvain) - LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Five tales in verse. With figures by the wise Y. A. Suliwan, engraved by Brother André. [S.l.: chez l'artiste], 1931. - In-8, 251 x 185: (4 ff. first 2 blanks), 143 pp. (4 ff. last 3 blanks), illustrated cover. Dark-green morocco, multiple gilt and cold-stamped fillets framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, framed by two wide bands of dark-green and light-green morocco inside, decorated with gilt and cold-stamped fillets, and in addition with a gilt fleuron at the corners of the light-green morocco frame, dark-green moiré silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, lined slipcase (Huser). A very rare edition of one of the finest works illustrated by Sylvain SAUVAGE (1888-1948). The book contains 5 tales by La Fontaine: Joconde. - La Fiancée du roi de Garbe. - Le Faiseur d'oreilles et le raccommodeur de moules. - La Gageure des trois commères. - Les Cordeliers de Catalogne. The illustrator, under the pseudonyms Y. A. Sulliwan and Brother André, created 97 color compositions, most of them erotic, including 26 etchings. This edition was printed in a limited edition of 56 numbered copies on japon à la forme paper. A very fine copy bound by Huser, with the original signed drawing of the vignette on page 103. Spine slightly faded. Provenance: Unidentified red Japanese seals.
