Large majolica dish with a central battle scene depicting the Emperor Decius confronting the Goths, and a Bérain-style grisaille decoration on a blue background of sphinxes, horns of plenty and foliage. Titled on reverse "Dèce se jette dans le gouffre". Monogrammed on reverse SCI. Probably Nevers, 19th century (Diam.: 51 cm) (a few enamel chips around the edges).
Decius attacks the Goths, who have crossed the Danube and invaded Mesia and Thrace. The final confrontation of this campaign, which took place at the Abrittus marshes in Dobroudja in June 251, sounded the death knell for Decius, who was killed along with his son Herennius.
