Juan de Mesa (Cordoba, 1583 - Seville, 1627)
"Saint John the Evangelist"
Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture.
92,5 x 44 x 41 cm.
Until the rediscovery of Juan de Mesa in the late 19th century by the Seville-basedhistorian José Bermejo y Carballo, who attributed a work of art to him, the name Mesa had not been mentioned for more than two and a half centuries, and his works were mistakenly attributed to his master Montañés, because of the outstanding quality of his work. Furthermore, in the 20th century, documents came to light that helped shed light on Mesa's life and work.
Even so, information about Mesa's childhood and youth is scarce, but it is known that he was baptised in Cordoba in 1583 and did not join the workshop of his eventual master until 1606, formalising his apprenticeship contract in 1607.
