Attributed to José de Paéz (Mexico City, 1721- c. 1780) "Holy Trinity" Oil on copper. 19 x 24,5 cm. Exquisite painting on copper, in a false oval. A mystery as unfathomable and unreachable, as Saint Augustine would say, Páez makes it feel close to us, everyday, tender, and sweet, giving his subjects rosy cheeks and pure white skin; with perfect, almost divine strokes. On the left, Jesus, openingto the side and wounded, wears the "Mystic Lamb" on his chest ("the Lamb who was slain..." Revelation 5:12-14); the Father, with the sceptreof command in the centre, identified with the Sun ("For the Lord God is our sun and our shield; He gives us grace and glory" Psalm 84:11), and the Holy Spirit, working in perfect union with the Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, on the right. ("He bears witness of the Father and the Son..." 2 Nephi 31:18). In summary, perfection in the seamless brushstrokes that seem to be painted by angels rather than by human hand.
