Viceregal School. Cuzco. Peru. 18th century. "The Holy Trinity crowning the Virgin Mary" Oil on canvas. 38 x 26,5 cm. The painting depicts a sequence within the cycle of the Virgin Mary's life found in the Book of Revelation. Three identical figures, representing the Holy Trinity, three in one with a papal mitre, crown the Virgin Mary. In this way, Mary can be interpreted as a Trinitarian figure: of the Son, as a virgin, in receiving and allowing herself to be loved by the Father; of the Father, the source of life-giving love, in her role as a mother; of the Holy Spirit, as a spouse, symbolising the bond of love between Father and Son and the opening to God's mystery on earth. The Virgin Mary, as the Immaculate Mary received into heaven, and in a sea of clouds, is observed by Saint Michael the Archangel, and either Saint Gertrude the Great or Saint Clare.
