A fringed leather dress, Spring-Summer 2001
A fringed leather dress, Spring-Summer 2001
labelled and numbered 86023, the top-stitched corseted brown leather bodice with punched decorations interwoven with ivory leather thongs, rope-twists of top-stitched leather form circular straps for the upper arms and a long draped loop down the back, the skirt formed from tiers of brown and white leather fringes mounted onto an organza underskirt, bust approx 86cm 34in, waist 66cm 26in
This dress comes from McQueen's final haute couture show for Givenchy before they parted ways due to 'artistic differences'. For this collection he was influenced by different world cultures and for this dress there are suggestions of Native American people with the interwoven leather strips and the use of fringing. The supple brown leather is butter-soft and the plain and punched decorations not only on the interwoven bands of the bodice but also on the tiered skirt are subtle and effective.
