Trapani, around 1700.
Probably created for a domestic altar or as a devotional object. The extremely rare overall design features a cube-shaped base, the wooden core covered with gilded sheet metal, the edges and ball feet as well as the corner figurines made of gilded bronze. The sides of the base are decorated with foliage in red coral, surrounded by opaque spheres. The sculptural corner applications in the shape of winged herms, cast and also gilded. A green-marbled wooden cross rises from the base, with the coral corpus of Christ on top. The body, carved from a single large piece of coral, is slender, four-nail type, with a finely undercut loincloth; the arms are attached. The ends of the beams and the foot of the cross are also decorated with coral - in the spandrels of the cross beams in the form of a halo. The carving, especially of the corpus, of rare artistic and technical quality. A.R. (14023124) (11)
