Rectangular panel depicting the suffering Christ in half-length, partially painted, the nimbus disc as well as the pastern and the corncob-shaped end of the mocking sceptre gilded. A stylized rosette in each of the lower corners and at the top. The inlaid inscription plaque in silver. Bordered by raised frame strips.
The style indicates a work from the Dutch colonial period in Ceylon. The island, Portuguese from 1505, fell under Dutch rule in the 17th century and under British rule in 1802. The Christian communities had a rich cultural activity and were able to develop their own style. A.R.
