MICROMOSAIC TONDO Total diameter: 7.5 cm. Signed "Aguatti" in the center of the lower rim (covered by the frame). Rome, 18th/19th century. Set in a gilded frame with a fine pearl bar and hanging loop. Depicting an owl in a landscape above a sheep it has killed. The micromosaic in a rare, finest execution, in which the individual tesserae are no longer recognizable to the naked eye. The artistic design is also of high quality. The Aguatti family produced celebrated mosaicists, Antonio was the son of Cesare Aguatti. Among other things, he worked as a professor for the Vatican workshops and maintained his studio at Piazza di Spagna 96. An almost identical depiction, but in a rectangle, was successfully sold together with seven other mosaics by the artist at Drouot in 2018 (EUR 90,000). Works by his hand in the Gilbert Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum London (inv. no. LOAN: GILBERT.489:1, 2-2008). A.R.
