RIVER LANDSCAPE
Oil on copper.
17 x 22 cm.
With black stencil number "DM343" verso.
In profiled ebonized frame.
Bright river landscape with reeds growing along the banks, overhanging trees and gentle hills in the distance, blurring in the light blue with the cloudy sky. On the left, under a tree, Mary holds the infant Jesus on her lap next to a basket of fruit.
The painter was a pupil of Nicolaas Geerts and became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp in 1615. Together with Abraham Govaerts (1589-1626), he worked as a landscape artist in paintings by Frans Francken the Younger (1581-1642). His style is still strongly reminiscent of the painting style of Pieter Brueghel the Elder (c. 1525 - c. 1569). (1401283) (13)
