TAVERN SCENE WITH CELEBRATING FARMERS Oil on wood. Parquetry. 56 x 77 cm. Signed "J Molenaer" lower center on table. We would like to thank Dr. Guido Jansen for information on the painting. In a simple, large interior with an open fireplace on the right-hand edge of the picture, in front of which a man sits with his back to the table, there is a group of people seated at tables, happily celebrating, playing music and singing. On the left-hand edge of the picture, a couple also appear to be dancing beneath an unseen window through which light falls into the room. In the foreground, two dogs, a cat and a large jug with a lid standing in the middle in front of a table on which a shiny pewter jug is being held by a man are also recognizable. The most striking feature of this depiction, which is rich in figures, is a woman in white and blue clothing with a red headdress sitting almost in the middle, playing a large mandolin held in her hands. Depicted in the typical manner of the famous artist. Trained by Frans Hals the Elder (1580-1666) and husband of the painter Judith Leyster (1600/10-1660). Molenaer went to Amsterdam in 1648 and worked together with Jan Lievens (1607-1674). (14023218) (18) Jan Miense Molenaer, 1609/10 Haarlem - 1668 ibid. PEASANTS CELEBRATING IN A TAVERN Oil on panel.
