THE TEMPTATION OF SAINT ANTONIUS
Oil on copper.
23.5 x 32.5 cm.
In decorative gilt frame.
In the center of the depiction Saint Anthony kneeling in front of a high rock with a small thatched roof. In front of him is an upright cross, a skull and an open book in which he has been reading. He is surrounded by numerous strange figures and bizarre characters who are trying to seduce him and dissuade him from his actions. These figures include a beautiful young woman with a raised wine glass, whom he looks at with his left hand raised and his serious dark eyes. Next to her is a woman with a horned head, behind him on the left is a figure with a human body and animal head, holding a long knife in his outstretched hand, and in front of him on the ground is a winged creature and a clothed monkey. In the background, a staircase leads up to a small chapel, where a figure is ringing the so-called Antonius bell hanging from a wooden frame. To the right, the viewer can see a wide, mountainous landscape in which three further figures and a small chapel can be seen. Painting in the artist's typical style with many details.
