ADAM AND EVA IN PARADISE
Oil on copper.
12.3 x 15.6 cm.
In an old, original carved and partially gilded frame of the period.
Small, miniature painting depicting the biblical narrative of paradise. The first human couple - before the Fall of Man - is placed at the absolute center of the depiction, their nudity standing out against the tree with its mighty crown. At the sides are the forest aisles typical of Brueghel's tree landscapes. The entire lower section of the picture is shown as a slightly hilly foreground, filled with almost all the known animals, which lie here side by side in paradisiacal peace. Against the political backdrop of the wars raging in Bouttat's era, such depictions of heavenly peace become all the more understandable. A.R. (1380817) (11)
