Peeter Gysels, 1621 Antwerpen – 1690/91 ebenda AN ELEGANT COUPLE VISITS A GARDEN NEAR A MANSION Oil on copper, on wood. Parquetted. 26.5 x 35 cm. Accompanied by a copy of an expertise by Dr. Luuk Pijl, specialist in Dutch and Flemish landscape painting, Dokuum, 14 December 2023, who also assigns the painting to the late 1670s or 1680s. The painting shows an elegant couple in the foreground in a garden in which several figures are at work. On the left is a large two-tiered fountain supported by two sculptural satyrs, while on the right, beyond a canal, a vast cultivated landscape with animals and a windmill can be seen in the background, under a high light blue sky with white cloud formations. On the left is the large, magnificent manor house with a long gazebo, and various types of fruit and vegetables lying on the ground in the foreground of the painting. The painting is a homage to the advantages of a well-managed estate. The hedge tunnel adjoining the house and the geometric garden came into fashion at the end of the 16th century. An almost identical landscape can be seen in a painting by the artist, which includes the figures of Vertumnus and Pomona. The overall design and the characterization of the figures in the present painting correspond to other works by the artist. (14023214) (18) Peeter Gysels, 1621 Antwerp - 1690/91 ibid.
