TRAVELING THROUGH A SOUTHERN VILLAGE Oil on canvas. Old doubling. 47.8 x 68.5 cm. Unsigned. In ebonized wide profile frame. According to the consignor, formerly with an expertise by Dr. Walther Bernt from 1968, who attributes the painting to Mathys Schoevaerdts. A landscape criss-crossed by hills, whose houses, some of which are multi-storey, adapt to the gradient of the hills, offers sufficient space for a stream shimmering in the light, dancing figures, a procession of travelers in the foreground and numerous trees contrasting with the summer sky. The present painting is compositionally very similar to a painting attributed to Schoevaerdt (40 x 57.5 cm), which is registered in the RKD under number 269909. Schoevaerdts was a pupil of Adriaen Frans Boudewijns (1644-1719); his last dated painting dates from 1702. Provenance: Auction Stuker, Bern, November 10, 1965, lot 1729 as Jan Adriaensz. de Man.
