ARCHITECTURAL CAPRICCIO WITH ROMAN MONUMENTS
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
73 x 111 cm.
In gilded frame with ornamental relief.
In midday sunlight under a slightly cloudy blue sky, a flat landscape with architectural set pieces from antiquity, as an overview of Roman history: the Colosseum can be seen as well as the Temple of Vesta, the Pyramid of Cestius and other monuments.
It is assumed that he was a pupil of Francesco Galli Bibiena (1659-1739), who already presented the fantasy of Roman cityscapes in a theatrical manner in his work, including graphic works, which Panini was certainly able to adopt even without meeting him personally. From 1711 in Rome, he also became acquainted with Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768). Initially active with decorative painting in palaces such as the Villa Patrizi or the Palazzo De Carolis, he increasingly devoted himself to the subject of antique architecture capriccios.
