THE DREAM OF JOSEPH
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
100 x 76 cm.
In a bronzed frame.
Accompanied by an expertise by Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome, June 28, 2019 and by Giacomo Lanzilotta, Bari, in copy.
The painting depicts the moment described in the Gospel of Matthew, in which the angel of God speaks to Joseph in a dream: "Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife, for what she has conceived is from the Holy Spirit. And she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins (Mt 1:21-22). In order to unite the three levels of experience in one picture, Corrado shows Joseph sleeping at the bottom right, the angel from whom the revelation emanates above him on the left, and Mary, the object of the dream, on the left in the middle ground on a gallery that can be reached via a staircase. What is interesting here is the figurative vocabulary that the artist uses to make the viewer understand that he is dealing with a miraculous, spiritual, not physical experience. For example, putti are shown in the top right, the Holy Spirit hovers over Mary in the form of a dove and an honorary velum hovers over her. A painting of the same subject is kept in the Pinacoteca civica di Montefortino and is slightly smaller.
