VENUS AND ADONIS
Oil on canvas.
64 x 80.5 cm.
In ornamental relief frame.
Accompanied by a copy of an expertise by Didier Bodart, Rome, October 5, 2005.
In an implied landscape, the focal point of which is a branching old tree, Venus sits with her hunting dogs and her quiver of arrows and hunting horn clutching her breast. Adonis is kneeling in front of her, his gaze fixed on her. Bodart compares the present painting with the Allegory of Antwerp, La Valette, Musée national des Beaux-Arts, c. 1640-1642, a painting in s'Hertogenbosch, Town Hall and also with an Allegory of Love and Music in the Noordbrabants Museum in s'Hertogenbosch.
