Painting pair
CHRIST AND THE ADULTERESS
and
LOTH AND HIS DAUGHTERS
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
Each 36 x 36 cm.
The paintings inside as a tondo, outside as a square in a gilded magnificent frame.
One painting shows the standing Christ, to whose left the scribes and Pharisees have brought a woman who has been caught in adultery, who is now kneeling in the right foreground and is to be stoned to death. The other painting shows Loth in a bright red robe and his two daughters in a cave trying to make him drunk with the help of wine. In the background is the burning city of Sodom and probably his wife, frozen to a pillar of salt. The two biblical depictions were popular motifs of the time. (1400312) (3) (18)
