SAINT FRANCISCUS AS A HERMIT Oil on canvas. Doubled. 119 x 92 cm. In wide gilded, ornamentally decorated frame. Accompanied by an expertise by Prof. Massimo Pulini, Montiano, December 17, 2021, copy. A skull lies on a boulder, above it, in optical foreshortening, a crucifix seen from behind, the mounted Christ with cross nimbus, facing the saint, who sits behind the boulder in his Franciscan habit and is about to receive his stigmata. Next to him is an open book, backed by an embankment and a charming hilly landscape, in keeping with the feeling of the Umbrian region. In his expert opinion, Pollini compares the present painting with a landscape-format representation by Angelo Caroselli, also depicting St. Francis, in the Staatliche Gemäldesammlungen and in a private collection.
