PAINTING OF THE MADONNA IN A WREATH OF FLOWERS Oil on canvas. Doubled. 78 x 68 cm. The painting is listed in the RKD picture archive under the number 0000026656. The pictorial motif, taken up several times from Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625) to Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), also shows here a painted framed portrait of the Madonna in grisaille technique. The framing with lateral volutes in the style of a stone frame. The portrait is surrounded by a brightly illuminated wreath of various flowers and leaves against a dark background. These include pink roses, mallows, white hydrangeas, feathered tulips, fire lilies, irises, panicles and other early summer flowers.
