The pictorial motif, taken up several times from Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625) to Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), also shows here a painted framed portrait of the Madonna in grisaille technique. The framing with lateral volutes in the style of a stone frame. The portrait is surrounded by a brightly illuminated wreath of various flowers and leaves against a dark background. These include pink roses, mallows, white hydrangeas, feathered tulips, fire lilies, irises, panicles and other early summer flowers. The petals, extremely finely painted, seem to shine out against the dark, almost black background. (1400882) (11)
