NAKED BATHERS BY A RIVER NEAR A FARMHOUSE
Oil on wood.
42 x 51.5 cm.
Monogrammed "PA" lower left.
In decorative frame.
Three naked men, two of whom are in the water while one is sitting in a boat, on the left side of a wide river in the foreground, which zigzags slightly backwards and narrows. In the background on the left is a large farmhouse with figures and animals on the edge of a small wood with large trees, some of which reach high into the sky. On the right is a pasture with two horses and a standing nude figure seen from behind, who has climbed out of the water and is drying himself. Harmonious depiction with a high, cloudy sky in restrained colors.
The artist was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age. He was born in Delft as the son of the portrait painter Jan van Asch and joined the Guild of St. Luke in 1623. According to the painter Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719), he specialized in small landscapes. (1401241) (18)
