THE THREE MARYS WITH MOTHER OF GOD AND CROWN OF THORNS BEFORE GOLGOTA Oil on canvas. 72.5 x 59.5 cm. Old collection number "262" verso on canvas. With presumed artist's inscription "Carlo Dolci" on stretcher. In ebonized profile frame. In this canvas, Carlo Maratta, who was also known as "Carletto delle Madonne", depicts the visit of the three Marys to the empty tomb of Christ, accompanied by the Virgin Mary (Mark 16:6-7). An angel approaches and shows the mother the crown of thorns, the symbol of her son's passion. There are at least two other versions of the present depiction, which are considered to be autograph: One was intended for Pope Alexander VIII Ottoboni, but was given to the cardinal of the same name, as the pontiff had since died, while the other version was intended for Niccolò Maria Pallavicini. Other artists such as Sebastiano Conca and Francesco Trevisiani referred to this composition, which is so characteristic of the Roman Baroque, in their works. The painter was one of the main masters of the classicist movement of the High Baroque in Rome, strongly influenced by his teacher Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661). Annotation: A comparable version was in auction at Sotheby's, Milan, November 30, 2004, lot 76 (86 x 71.5 cm). Also comparable is the version in the Fondazione Sorgente Group, Rome, with the expert opinion of Giancarlo Sestieri of June 15, 2005, who points out that there are at least two autograph versions of this composition. Furthermore, there is said to be a version in Melbourne Hall, Derby, Great Britain.
