CORNELIA PRESENTS HER SONS TIBERIUS AND GAIUS GRACCHUS TO A WOMAN Oil on canvas. Doubled. 148 x 112 cm. In decorative frame. Cornelia, daughter of Scipio and mother of the Gracchi, was a remarkable woman in Rome in the 2nd century BC. The painting shows her being questioned about her most valuable jewelry by a luxurious Campanian woman standing on her left. Seated in a yellow-bluish robe, she confidently points with her index finger to her sons Tiberius Gracchus and Gaius Gracchus, with whom she forms an intimate group of three. Cornelia is regarded as a symbol of the virtuous, highly educated mother. The sensually beautiful Campanian woman represents the antithesis of female existence. Annotation: The artist studied in Rome under Giuseppe Cesari, Francesco Albani and Pietro da Cortona. His work also shows the influence of Caravaggio. He settled in Venice before 1629. From 1656 he moved to Treviso, where he died in 1661.
