Maurice Utrillo, 1883 Paris – 1955 Dax
LE MARCHÉ À MONTMARTRE, 1924
Oil on cardboard.
38 x 51.8 cm.
Signed and dated lower left "Maurice. Utrillo, V. 1924."
In baroque and gilded frame.
Accompanied by an expertise by Jean Fabris.
The market stalls behind the slender trees are almost unrecognizable, so skilfully does Utrillo integrate them into the spatial structure with their green facades and vegetal displays. Whereas his other paintings are dominated by strict contours and areas of color, here Utrillo shows that he is also able to give the natural appearance of the city an edge. Only the left-hand façade of a café stretches the passers-by - mostly women whose skirts are shaped like large keyholes - into the background, creating a sense of depth.
