DANCING GIRL
Oil on canvas.
101 x 66 cm.
Signed "Isaac Israels" lower left.
In decorative gilt frame.
In an interior room, leaning against a wall next to a wooden door, the standing young dancer in a tight-fitting short pink dance costume, probably decorated with artificial pink flowers, her head turned slightly to one side and her eyes looking out of the picture. A high-quality painting in reduced, harmonious colors in a rapid brushstroke, in the manner typical of the well-known artist.
The painter was the son of the early Impressionist Jozef Israels (1824-1911). He first attended the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague before enrolling at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. In the summer, he often spent time in Scheveningen on the Dutch coast, where he worked with the older German impressionist Max Liebermann (1847-1935). He was a friend of Georg Hendrik Breitner (1857-1923), especially during his time working in Paris and London. In 1928 he was awarded the gold medal for his painting "Rider in a Red Skirt".
