Dalou was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and Francisque Joseph Duret. He made his debut at the Ècole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1862. Accused of involvement in the Paris Commune uprising, he fled to England, where he found great recognition. Back in Paris, he was awarded the Salon Medal of Honor in 1883. In 1899, he became Commander of the Legion of Honor. Works by his hand can be found in numerous important public collections around the world.
