PHRYNE Height: 66 cm. Signed on the base. The theme of Phryne, the ancient hetaera whose beauty, according to legend, even influenced the court, was frequently taken up in art. Pradier created a further variation with the peplos held aloft.Pradier is one of the most important sculptors of the Louis-Philippe era. He was a pupil of Lemont from 1809 and studied the works of antiquity in Rome. He became famous for his sculptures of ancient subjects, but also for portrait busts, such as those of King Louis-Philippe, who appointed him as a lecturer at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1827, as well as the statue of Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Geneva. Pradier was also active as an author. A.R. (14015810) (11)
