ANDROMEDA, 1857
Height: 65 cm.
Signed "J. FRANCESCHI / statuaire".
Finely executed bronze cast, with gold and double patina. The plaster model "Androméde" for the stone version (100 x 45 x 53 cm) is in the Musée d'Art d'Archéologie et de Sciences Naturelles in Troyes. According to Greek mythology, Andromeda was chained to a sea rock to be sacrificed to a sea monster until Perseus freed her.
Franceschi was a pupil of François Rude (1784-1855), made his debut at the Salon in 1848 and became famous above all for his portrait busts, such as those for Jacques Offenbach and Charles Gounod. He was awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor in 1874. A.R. (1401585) (11)
