MARKUS SQUARE IN VENICE
Oil on canvas.
39 x 57 cm.
Signed lower right.
View from an elevated position across Piazza di San Marco, with the Campanile in the center and St. Mark's Basilica on the right. The square is bordered on the left by the Biblioteca di Sansovino. The Austrian flag is bright red and white, as it also appears in another of the painter's works, "Return of the Bronze Horses of San Marco", painted on the occasion of their return from France in 1815. At the time, Venice was part of the Habsburg dominion. The costumes of the staffage of figures are also contemporary: ladies with hoop skirts and parasols, men in black hats, including a man in uniform. (1400641) (11)
