COASTAL PIECE OFF NAPLES Oil on canvas. 75 x 146 cm. Signed "F.R. Unterberger" lower left. Unframed. Coastal scene off Naples with fishing boats moored and waves gently lapping at the sandy beach. In the background, the outline of Vesuvius blurred in the hazy clouds. The painting offered here in a representative format impresses with its radiant colors and the translation of the midday summer mating of the Neapolitan harbor population. The artist was a Tyrolean landscape painter. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, he was a student at the Düsseldorf Academy under Andreas Achenbach (1815-1910) from 1860 to 1864 and later a private pupil of Oswald Achenbach (1827-1905). Towards the end of the 1860s, he also traveled to southern Italy, where he created numerous paintings.
