LAGOON OFF VENICE
Oil on mahogany.
45.5 x 60.5 cm.
Residual signature lower left, retouched lower right.
In gilt frame with textile passepartout.
In this fresh painting, a summery atmosphere spreads across the lagoon in front of Venice, the silhouette of which can be seen on the right edge of the painting, while the sun bathes the gently undulating water and the boats lying on it in a shimmering, silky light. A comparable composition was offered on November 14/15, 1990 under lot 122 at the Hotel Drouot in Paris. A painting in the Standford University Museum of Art with the inv. no. 1979.70 and a painting in the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts, also show the same compositional scheme.
After successfully studying architecture, the artist undertook several study trips to Italy between 1845 and 1848 and eventually made painting his profession. In Venice, he found inspiration for his works, in particular still lifes, portraits and landscapes. He can be attributed to the Barbizon school. In 1857, the French government made him a Knight of the Legion of Honor.
