FOUR VEDUTES
Oil on canvas.
44 x 76 cm.
In decorative frame.
Comprising: a veduta of Whampoa, now called Pazhou, an island in the Pearl River. This used to be the most important anchorage for ships of overseas traders, mostly Europeans. A veduta of Shanghai with ships and neatly structured buildings. A veduta of the Hongs in Canton, Hong was a type of Chinese trading settlement and the associated building type. Hongs emerged in Guangzhou (formerly known as Canton) as intermediaries between Western and Chinese merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries. A veduta of Praya Grande of Macao, where the governor's palace, administrative offices, consulates and main trading offices were located.
The views are masterfully reproduced with almost photographic accuracy, windows and flags, fishermen are depicted close to nature and give a clear picture of 19th century China. Partially restored, retouched. (1401791) (19)
