François Flameng, 1856 Paris – 1923 ebenda
ELITE GENDARMES OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD DURING THE FIRST EMPIRE
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
100 x 73 cm.
Signed "François.Flameng." lower right.
In decorative gilt frame with plaque with artist's name and title to lower edge.
In front of a partially shaded light-colored wall, from which an entrance with a high wooden door is visible on the right, above which a stone plaque reads "ETAT-MAJOR QUATIER IMPER...", a standing elite soldier in a splendid, yellow-red-blue uniform with a high headdress, his sword hanging from a belt behind him. He is wearing light-colored gloves and has placed his left arm on the saddle of a magnificent horse standing next to him, which looks out of the side of the picture. He rests his right hand loosely on his hip and looks out of the picture to the left. The wall behind him is partly scrawled with painting and words. A high-quality depiction of the artist, who became one of France's most important official war painters during the First World War.
The French painter attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he became a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889). In 1905, he was appointed as a lecturer at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He was awarded many prizes.(1401486) (18)
