PENITENT MAGDALENE AND ANGEL IN A LANDSCAPE
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
116 x 168 cm.
In gilded wooden frame.
In a wide, idyllic landscape on the right, Mary Magdalene kneeling before a boulder as a penitent with long blonde hair, her head held back by a nimbus, before an altar made of stone: on it a standing cross, an open prayer book and a skull. The bundle of brushwood lying on top and a few turnips on the ground are symbolic of mortification. To the left, the landscape with a river and a shepherd with his sheep on the bank. In the sky two winged angels with a bouquet of flowers, from which rays of light fall down on the kneeling figure, to whom she reverently turns with slightly raised arms. Partly rest, partly retouched, color chips. (1400704) (3) (18)
