THE ROBBERY OF PROSERPINA
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
63.5 x 76 cm.
In brown flambeau frame.
Pluto, the god of the underworld, can be seen in the center of the painting in his golden chariot drawn by two horses, abducting the violently resisting Proserpina, the daughter of Jupiter and Ceres. The nymph Kyane, lingering in her spring, observes the robbery and tries to prevent the abduction by raising her arms. Pluto makes the abductee his wife and thus ruler over the dead and queen of the underworld. Isolated rest. (14008924) (18)
