OLYMPIA IS ABANDONED Oil on wood. 27 x 22 cm. In gilded frame. Depiction of a scene from the 10th canto of the epic poem "Orlando furioso" by Ludovico Ariosto (published 1516): The Dutch princess Olympia is abandoned by her lover Biren after their last night together on the beach. Waking up alone with a sheet around her waist, she waves desperately after the ship disappearing in the distance. At the left edge of the picture the seated Olympia with a chain on her leg, anticipating the later bondage, and on the sea the splendid three-master with flag under a high, cloudy sky. (1390481) (18)
