MADONNA WITH THE CHILD IN HER ARMS Oil on canvas. 48 x 35 cm. Old browned adhesive label with two lacquer seals and inscription "Eigentum von Emil Adam, Inv. Nr. /Meister / Elisabeta Sirani 1638 - 1660." verso on stretcher. Further correspondingly damaged Framed. This painting from the collection of Emil Adam (1843-1924), an important painter of the Munich School, perfectly demonstrates the painter's style. The painting shows a young Mary with the child sitting in front of a curtain, her gaze directed towards the child, in the background a city fortification standing in the light with a round barbican and tower, towards which a stone bridge leads. The choice of background was probably not arbitrary, but based on a knowledge of symbolic motifs. The painter was one of the main masters of the classicist movement of the High Baroque in Rome, strongly influenced by his teacher Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661). Provenance: Emil Adam (1843-1924) was the son of the animal painter Benno Raffael Adam (1812-1982) and became famous for his paintings of horses, most of which were commissioned by the court.
