DANIEL IN THE LIONS' DEN Oil on two joined wooden panels. 45 x 61 cm. In a magnificent frame. The subject of the painting is taken from the Book of Daniel 6:1-28. In the center is Daniel, clad in a long white and bright red cloth around his hips, sitting with folded hands and looking imploringly out of an opening in the pit towards heaven. He is surrounded by a large group of lions, one of them with its mouth open. Rubens depicted the lions of a Moroccan subspecies that were in the Spanish governor's menagerie in Brussels at the time. While Daniel is depicted here as a middle-aged man, the biblical Daniel was already over 80 years old. Isolated rest. Annotation: The painting is entirely faithful to the original, painted around 1600, which measures 220 x 330 cm and is kept in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. (14023241) (18)
