INTERIOR WITH TWO SHEEP, A DOG AND SHOT FEATHERED CATTLE
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
74 x 91 cm.
Inside a barn or storeroom, two sheep lying on the ground, one of them with its legs tied up. To their right is a basket with light-colored cloth and dead poultry, from which a cat has seized a rooster and is looking down with wide-open eyes at a barking dog standing at the bottom left of one of the sheep. At the top left, large pieces of meat and a ham are depicted on a shelf with a cloth, while baskets of vegetables stand to the right. High-quality painting in restrained colors with skillful chiaroscuro.
The artist studied under Frans Snyders (1579-1657), after which he traveled to Italy. His works were collected there by Ferdinand II de' Medici. He moved to Paris in 1659 and was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1663. He was employed by the French King Louis XIV to produce paintings of all the new animals that were added to his menagerie at Versailles. In 1673, Bernaerts produced 46 studies of 52 animal species.
