FLOWER WREATH CARTOUCHE WITH ANTIQUE HEAD IN CAMAIEU
Oil on wood.
27.5 x 21.5 cm.
Frame with collection number "121" and name of Daniel Seghers. With old, barely legible label verso.
In fluted ebonized frame with gold border.
Architectural cartouche in stone gray depicted in grisaille. Above finely executed blossoms in blue, red and white. Central oval cartouche framed by a profile with an emperor's head facing right in golden-brown camaieu. Seghers almost exclusively painted floral still lifes, and he liked to have his cartouches filled by fellow painters such as Erasmus Quellinus the Younger (1607-1678), Cornelis Schut the Elder (1597-1655) and Johan Boeckhorst (1605-1668). Seghers was often inspired by floral wreaths and arrangements by Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625). (13501513) (13)
