HOUSE WITH JETTY ON THE BANK OF A RIVER
Oil on wood.
33.5 x 29.5 cm.
Signed lower center on boat, old red wax seal verso.
In gilded magnificent frame.
Under a high sky, with a diagonal composition from lower left to upper right, a church tower and a few trees, a smaller building and finally a large building in the right foreground, surrounded by two trees rising into the sky, can be seen in the background. A small boat is anchored in front of the house with two figures unloading something. Two men can also be seen at the bottom left of the picture, while two others are unloading a wooden barrel on the shore. Painting in predominantly monochrome beige-brown colors, broken up by the red clothing of the seated man.
The painter was the brother of Jan Miense Molenaer (1609/10-1668) and Bartholomeus Molenaer (around 1610/28-1650) and became a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1651. The painter was known for his winter scenes, but also for his rural motifs and humorous genre scenes. Works by his hand can be found in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne and the Von der Heydt-Museum in Wuppertal.(1401503) (18)
