VENICE - SANTA MARIA DELLA SALUTE IN THE MOONLIGHT
Oil on canvas.
58 x 81 cm.
Signed lower right, inscribed "München" and dated "1893".
The son of a Munich court actor, Heilmayer studied at the Munich Academy, but left the academy to develop his own painting style. On his travels through Italy, Belgium, northern Germany and France, he found inspiration to depict his impressions, especially in foggy or moonlit views. His oeuvre includes numerous paintings of Rome and Venice, which differ significantly in their late Romantic moods from the views of cities that had been common until then.
In the present painting, too, the mood is heightened by the foggy light in which the church of Santa Maria della Salute appears in romantic silhouette, accompanied by the lonely journey of a gondola on a moonlit canal. A.R. (1401337) (11)
