Russia, second half of the 19th century.
The icon depicts the pokrov (Russian: veil, protective cloak), a particularly popular theme in Russian painting. In the center of the composition, which is rich in figures, the Mother of God spreads out her maphorion (shoulder scarf), which was in the Blachernen church with her belt, as protection over the people present. Below her, the hymn singer Romanos is depicted singing the Christmas canon. In plexiglass frame. (1400552) (13)
