Ravananugraha murti
Carved wood
(Accents and missing lower part.)
Height 100 cm; Width: 51 cm
This carved wood panel depicts Ravananugraha murti. The god Shiva and his consort Parvati are depicted in the upper part, dancing on Mount Kailash surrounded by attendants, including Nandi, Shiva's cow-headed vehicle, guardian of Mount Kailash. The ten-headed demon Ravana, forbidden passage by Nandi, tried to shake the mountain in revenge. Shiva then imprisoned Ravana beneath Mount Kailash. In South India, legend has it that Ravana cut off one of his heads to make a vina. The demon is represented here in the lower part, with nine heads, playing the vina and singing praises to Shiva to obtain his release.
