Tortorel, Jacques (1550 - 1575) Large Engraving on Paper representing the Taking of the Town of Nimes by the Protestant Army on November 15, 1569 - French School of the 16th Century
Engraved measurements: 49 x 33 cm, frame measurements: 60 x 45 cm. Representation of the taking of Nimes by the Protestant Army, represented on the left side of the Porte des Precheurs, by the Protestant army. In the center of the image a detachment is represented entering the city through a small arched canal that empties into the river: the iron gate that prohibited access had previously been patiently sawn for several nights. The Protestant cavalry and their harquebusiers, who occupy the foreground of the image, descend towards one of the city gates opened by the soldiers thus infiltrated. Here and there you can recognize the various ancient monuments of Nîmes: the Magne Tower, the amphitheater and the Maison Carrée. Another engraving identical to the present one offered at auction preserved in the Museum of the Villa de Paris, inventory number 2022.0.1257
