Large Baby Jesus in Lead and Wood attributed to the Work of Juan Martínez Montañés (Alcalá la Real, 1568 - Seville, 1649), Sevillian Baroque school of the 17th century
Child only measurements: 70 x 35 x 30 cm, base measurements 27 x 33 x 25 cm. In gilded and polychrome wood. The sculptural piece that we studied is of a child Saint John the Baptist, commonly called San Juanito. His pose corresponds to the classic iconiography associated with Saint John, with his left arm raised in what would correspond to raising a staff or staff and displaying a phylactery with the legend "Ecce Agnus Dei"; and with his right arm pointing to the lamb that lies at his feet that seeks the Saint with his gaze. "The carving of Saint John the Baptist as a child reliably presents both the aesthetic features and the technical solutions of the Sevillian sculptor Juan Martínez Montañés, whose authorship we rigorously establish based on the comparative foundation offered by the works in his catalogue, which are have been exhaustively analyzed. Provenance: Former private collection, Spain.
