Attributed to Giovanni Migliara (1785-1837) Capriccio veneziano, after Canaletto. Oil on canvas. Gilded wood frame. Note : This work is based on the composition "Capriccio con edifici palladiani"(Caprice with Palladian buildings) by the famous Venetian painter Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto (1697-1768), painted around 1756-59 and now in the National Gallery in Parma. While the gondolas recall the city of the Doges, the buildings visible in the composition are reminiscent of two Vicenza monuments (the Basilica Palladiana on the right and the Palazzo Chechiati on the left) designed by the architect Andrea Palladio. The central building represents Palladio's unrealized project for the Rialto Bridge. A native of Milan, Giovanni Migliara followed in the footsteps of 18th-century Venetian masters such as Canaletto, Francesco Guardi (1712-1793) and Bernado Bellotto (1722-1780). Migliara's copies were intended for the bourgeoisie, who were still attracted by these imaginary views in the early 19th century.
